From the strategy workshops to the brand development to the design of their headquarters to the design of their NEW headquarters - I couldn't possibly fit the full Bethany Legacy story all within a single case study.

When BLF rapidly outgrew their original headquarters, they returned to us for Round 2. Having acquired a whole suite of offices right on Main Street in downtown Madison, IN, this space presented us with some unique challenges and opportunities.
1) True to their nature, BLF wanted to ensure this space could be used by anyone in the county for any reason - part coworking space and part event center. We needed to ensure that conference rooms, copy centers, and hospitality areas were welcoming to and accessible for community members and employees alike.
2) Spaces that transition seamlessly from public to private. We created a visual strategy for (a) Welcoming public spaces, (b) Balanced internal work spaces, and (c) Energetic communal meeting spaces.
3) Retain a little character. Though the space - once a bank, then a boutique clothing shop - hadn't maintained all of its historic charm, there were still some unique features the client wanted to try to incorporate where possible. TWO immovable bank vaults, unique arches and wrought iron: we were able to fold in those elements & ensure they felt true to the brand.
This time around, I was challenged to flex my creative direction muscles. I developed the visual language for the environment and created graphic concepts for multiple features. I directed and mentored our junior designers through revisions and critiques. I also defined the color, material, and finish direction for the space, art directed the murals, and ensured the brand maintained consistency across every touchpoint.

2026 New Headquarters
With a small space that had to make a big impact, the original headquarters needed a few bold moments to ground their workspace.
My first foray into EGD, I created an illustrative mural showing the iconic, historic buildings and spaces that provide community in this region, so that any - all - of the people of Jefferson County feel at home in the space. I also created an interactive art piece originally inspired by temperature blankets, a favorite of crochet lovers.
First, we ask a visitor to make a wish for the county, writing it down on a slip of colored paper. Then, they replace a slip of paper already rolled up inside the frame with their own wish. Finally, on the slip they take with them, there's a call to action. A way to help tramsform their wish into reality. Over time, this piece will become a unique mosaic of color & a representation of the hard work we all have to do to make our lofty dreams of communal success a reality.

As a Senior Designer with Mertz Design Studio, I supported the work across multiple layers, from workshop orchestration, into early concepting, and finally through the visual development of the Bethany Legacy Foundation brand, website, and inaugural headquarters.
During community workshops, I helped our facilitator capture ideas in real time, eventually translating those conversations into the visual directions, themes, and early sketches that would help to define the Bethany Legacy brand and environments. Honestly, this was one of my favorite parts of the process - and one of the standout learning opportunities of my career so far.
From there, I moved into concept art and illustration for the environmental graphic design of the office space. I took my first stab at sourcing materials and artwork for the original Madison, IN headquarters, I created an interactive art feature inspired by temperature blankets, and I even illustrated the mural of Jefferson County that has come to embody the organization.
Finally, I led the art direction and launch of the final Bethany Legacy Foundation website.

The Challenge
In 2021, the sale of King’s Daughters Hospital created a rare opening: a chance to reimagine what community health could look like in Jefferson County, Indiana.
Bethany Legacy Foundation wasn’t interested in incremental change. They were aiming for complete and total transformation - and also to model what's possible for small towns across the nation.
But first, they needed to listen. We partnered with them to step into the community, host workshops, and gather insight directly from the people they serve. The goal: build a brand rooted in real voices, not assumptions. Then, bring that brand to life both digitally and in-person.
